Or this post can be called 'how to work out without a gym membership or a massive house', which probably describes the majority of us. No gym membership or a large home where you are free to work out to your heart's content, can often leave us feeling unmotivated and falling at the first hurdle when it comes to achieving that dream summer bod. Not to worry, even though it is almost June and school is ending for the summer for the most of us, there is still time and with these workouts that you can do in your living room or bedroom, you can make everyone think that you spent months (and a lot of money) in the gym. Just clear out some space wherever you like and you're ready to go...
1. Weights
When my friend suggested to me not that long ago that I should start using weights, I gave her a confused look and told her that I wasn't interested in bodybuilding. However, I have learnt that apart from burning calories, using weights are great for strengthening your bones and increasing your flexibility. What interested me in particular about weights was, it helped me be a better runner. I actually slightly regret not using weights sooner, as it could've helped me when I was on my sprint team at secondary school and it is a super easy workout which literally requires no space at all. You don't even need to buy actual weights either to lift weights, just get yourself a water bottle and fill it up with sand. Yeah. Easy. This workout is perfect for those working out on a budget.
2. Yoga
This workout is highly recommended as it is an awesome workout whilst helps you de-stress from the events from life. All you need is a small space to lay a yoga mat and can be used for people with all fitness levels! Just make sure there isn't anything breakable nearby.
3. Barre Workouts
I'm fully aware that none of us own a ballet studio, but barre workouts are very easy to do and can be done in almost every room in the house. It's great for your posture, helps to strengthen your abdominal muscles, and toning your butt. Instead of using an actual barre, you can use a table or chair near you, but just make that the 'barre' is stable as an unsteady barre can cause injury if you lose your balance.
4. Exercise Bike
The good ol' exercise bike is ideal for small spaces, and perfect for getting exercise during long winters when it's too cold to get out or you don't fancy trekking off to the gym. And, they're not as expensive as you might think either, you don't need to buy a full machine, as smaller models that are basically a set of pedals are available for as little as £20/$30.
5. Skipping
Don't try skipping if you live in an upstairs apartment, as your neighbors will not appreciate the noise! But if you jumping up and down on the spot isn't going to bother anyone, then skipping is a good and fun way of working out in a small space. You don't need as much room as you think - but again, watch out for vases and the TV!
6. Pushups, Lunges & Squats
I think out of all of these workouts listed here, these are my favorite as you don't need equipment or plenty of space to work out. You can easily do pushes, lunges, squats and similar moves in a small space, and without even a single piece of equipment. Make sure to so a set of each move to get an effective workout as it's important to repeat each one several times and to do a combination of moves; repeating only one move means an uneven workout.
Living in a small space shouldn't stop you from keeping fit, there are many ways that you can exercise, however limited your floor space. Whether it's in your bedroom, a study or a small lounge, every room has a potential workout area. What's your favorite way to keep fit? Let me know and I'll talk to you soon!
